Wilson brings coworking experience to help grow CoLab Orlando’s community
(Update – as seen TV)
Our CoLab Orlando members have likely seen a new face in the hallways. It’s Brian Wilson, CoLab’s new community director. Brian has experience in coworking, having spent time at a coworking space in Portland, Ore., and he already plans to help grow our community.
Tell us about yourself.
I’m originally from New Jersey, and I graduated from Ramapo College in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Contemporary Arts. After college, I got a job at Walt Disney World, where I worked on and off for three years as a cast member and front desk trainer. I later moved to Portland, Ore., because I fell in love with the city once during a vacation. While I was there, I worked at a coworking space for a year and a half.
When did you first get introduced to the coworking concept?
Back in 2008. My friend, Julie, operated a coworking space in Portland. She saw me at a coffee shop once where I was working — I’m a writer and a fundraiser — and she invited me to visit her in her coworking space. She encouraged me to work there, spread out my papers and network with other entrepreneurs.
She later went on maternity leave, and I was only supposed to be there for a couple of months to help run things. I ended up staying at souk for a year and a half.
What brings you back to Orlando?
My family and friends are here. I love the temperature here, the sun, local events and festivals.
How did you hear about this job opening?
A friend forwarded me the job posting with the subject line that read, “Isn’t this your job?” When I opened up the job description, I saw that CoLab was looking for someone to grow a coworking community located inside a historic building in downtown Orlando. I almost dropped my phone, I was so excited.
What is your role at CoLab?
My official title is community director. I’ll be working with current members as well as recruiting other people from Central Florida to try out our coworking space. I’ll be putting on various events as well as working with the tech community in hopes of bringing more programs and community events for them to CoLab.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part is meeting new people looking for the perfect workspace and having them find that CoLab is great for them. I also enjoy connecting with current members over a game of ping-pong.
What do you like to do for fun when you’re not working?
I like music. I love live music downtown. I’m also in and around various central Florida attractions. I try to find more unique attractions versus the typical attractions.
What’s an interesting fact about you that many people don’t know?
I used to perform as a singer and I have performed at Carnegie Hall singing choral music.
In your opinion, what makes CoLab so great?
The amenities are amazing as well as the flexibility and access we have available to us.
