Coworking will continue to grow in 2014

It may have looked like your typical coffee shop gathering, but one Brooklyn building hosted four of the most prominent young tech companies in the wake of an emergency. It happened after Hurricane Sandy, which wiped out the power of many offices in New York. A quaint studio invited staff from Gawker, Tumblr, Foursquare and Vimeo to work from its space. It’s the most prominent example of a new trend in business called coworking in which professiona ls from different businesses and industries work independently in a community space. It’s collaborative, fun, and best of all, professionals experience a productivity boost. If you’re a business owner or entrepreneur, coworking may be the bottom-line boost your business needs to survive. By the Numbers Coworking may sound like an employee-driven initiative to break the shackles of the traditional office, but it’s paying dividends for business owners. The Deskmag.com Global Coworking Survey 2012 revealed that …

Coworking Environment For Great for An Orlando Business Tell us about yourself and your company. I’ve always been a “maker”- ever since I was a kid building LEGOs and drawing pictures.  As a graphic designer and industrial designer I use that same passion to build brands and develop products for my clients. In 2011, I founded Grey Gorilla Design as an additional creative outlet outside of my full-time job as the Director of Design at Noble Inc.  Eventually Grey Gorilla required my full attention and I’m now the sole full-time employee along with a team of trusted contractors. Where were you before CoLab? It’s been a “Green Eggs and Ham” type of situation.  I’ve worked just about everywhere- my home office, co-worker’s home offices, coffee shops, client’s offices, bars, parks… anywhere with internet. What brings you here? I worked in a corporate office setting for 10 years, so after venturing …

CoLab Orlando Video — Why Working in Coffee Shops is a Pain

Posted on by colabadmin in coworking orlando, orlando coworking news | No Comments

Forget the stale service and try coworking in Orlando instead Ever tried working in a coffee shop? Working in a hip coffee shop sounds like a great idea. Comfy chairs, access to awesome lattes and free WiFi should make for a convenient and uber-cool place to get some work done. After all, with smart phones, tablets and powerful laptops, you have everything you need, right? WRONG! Coffee shops are more than just a cool place to hang out — they’re a business. And like any business, they make money by selling things to customers. If you take three hours to complete a project in your local shop and only buy a small cappuccino, you’re taking up valuable space that might keep other paying customers from enjoying their visit. As a result, there has been a trend of coffee shops trying to politely and gently give people like you the message: …

Five years later, CoLab is still the perfect choice for Orlando entrepreneurs In 2008, CoLab Orlando opened up its doors in the beautiful and historic Angebilt Building in Downtown Orlando. Over the years we’ve expanded to several floors, knocked out walls, welcomed new friends and said goodbye to old ones. Through it all, we’ve wanted to provide the kind of space that would appeal to Orlando’s entrepreneurs, startups, creatives and freelancers. “At its heart, coworking is about being able to break free of the conventions of more traditional offices and making connections with people you might never have met otherwise,” says Brian Wilson, CoLab Orlando’s Community Director. “It’s an alternative to that isolation you can feel when you work at home or the limitations you sometimes meet when you work out of a Starbucks. It’s all about joining in a collaborative space where you can thrive.” CoLab was on the …

People often tell Brian that location is the No. 1 priority. “You should make sure you’re happy with the neighborhood you’re going to work in,” Brian says. “We suggest downtown Orlando!” Another response Brian hears often is, “What are the community members like?” We get rave reviews from everyone who works here, whether they come in for a desk on an …

Posted on by colabadmin in coworking orlando, Members, orlando coworking news, Orlando News, Orlando Virtual Office | No Comments

Freelance writer finds inspiration in Orlando creative space By day, Marianne Kirby parks herself in a cubicle world as a tech editor. By night, Marianne pulls up a chair or a beanbag and awakens her creative side at CoLab Orlando. At the beginning of summer, Marianne joined the CoLab Lounge, a collaborative work environment where she rents the space she needs for the time it will take her to complete her next writing project. The freelance writer and aspiring novelist finds it easier to work in the Orlando creative space than, say, a coffee house or her living room. Here’s what she had to say about her CoLab experience. How did you hear about CoLab? I was familiar with the sort of general idea of coworking, so I started exploring workspaces in Orlando that didn’t have my husband, my dog and the television. I contacted Urban Rethink, and they put me …
